Abby let fans know on Dec. 16 that she’s retiring as captain of the USA’s champion soccer team on Dec. 16 with a tweet that read simply “make them forget me,” just before deleting her account altogether. Walking off the field after playing her final game – a friendly match against China in Louisiana – the same night, Abby gave the fans and her team the heartfelt goodbye they deserved. “I love this team,” started the fearless leader of Team USA. “It has been my pleasure and my honor to represent you all, the fans, for as long as I’ve been able to. My family, my friends, you guys are up in the suites, I wish I was there right now.” From now on, Abby will be able to watch her team, now her best friends and family, fight on from the stands.
Sadly, Abby lost her last game, with China winning 1-0. However, Abby didn’t take the defeat negatively. Instead, she felt it was a sign that it’s time for her to move on, to make room for other stars to shine. “The reality is, I think symbolically, the way this game went means that this team… for me it means I can walk away,” said Abby. “The future is so bright. These women are going to kill it, I know it.”
Talking about the strong women she won the 2015 World Cup with, Abby could barely hold herself together. “Before I get emotional,” said Abby, “I just want to genuinely express how much I’ve given myself to this team and how important…” Abby choked up and clutched at her heart while brushing tears away before continuing. “How important it is to give all of yourself to whatever you want to do in your life, as a passion.”
“I love you guys so much,” said Abby, before warning New Orleans of the debauchery that’s to come from her celebration. “Bourbon Street, watch out!” she said, dropping the mic and walking away. Congratulations Abby, you’ve been a class act and America thanks you for leading us to victory. You will be missed!
